More about Valencia, Spain

Valencia, the large province which borders Alicante to the north, is steeped in history and merits exploration, particularly if you have a hire car.

Its capital, Valencia, is the third largest city in Spain. It is an unmissable city: it is the home of paella, and there are many wonderful traditional restaurants where this delicious dish can be enjoyed.

The marks of history are all over the city and are most prominently displayed in its architecture, which ranges from the Roman, to the Moorish and Gothic. Yet, contrastingly, Valencia's most iconic building is the ultra-modern City of Arts and Sciences complex.

Do not limit yourself to the city of Valencia when exploring this region however, fascinating though it may be. Take your car rental into the surrounding areas which hold many different attractions for the touring visitor. One of the most significant of these is the Albufera National Park. In this reserve sits the largest lake in the whole of Spain, making it one of the most important wildlife habitats in Iberia. Many rare species of wading bird make their homes here.

These wetland areas are commonly used for growing rice, a key ingredient in many traditional local dishes. For an opportunity to savour some of the best local fare, make a visit in your hire car to the village of El Palmar.

This village is also home to much of the work of the artist Blasco Ibanez. A boat trip on the lake as the sun goes down will round off a day here beautifully.

There are many other delights to savour in the Valencia region by venturing a few miles out from the city. Head north and you will find the Monasterio del Puig (Puig Monastery).

This is a fascinating site, full of medieval history, and all the atmosphere of the time of the Conquest still remains.

A little further north can be found Sagunto castle, dominating the town and surrounding scenery. Sagunto is also home to the ruins of a Roman theatre, so is well worth a visit.
