Exploring the National parks with a car hire

The National parks of serra calderona, muela de cortes, sierra espuna and carrasco y el valle. Explore the parks with a hire car.

There are several national parks in and around the Costa Blanca, and if you are hiring a car a visit to at least one of these is a must.

One of the largest and most striking is the Sierra Calderona National Park. Situated just slightly north of the Alicante region, in Valencia, the Sierra Calderona covers 17,772 hectares, and was declared a National Park in 2002. It is a park of stunning rock formations, being part of the foothills of the Iberico mountains.

As well as the spectacular ridges of red sandstone, the park is home to many fascinating species of plants and animals. The park is dominated by forests of Aleppo pine, and two of its most striking birds are the peregrine falcon and Bonelli's eagle.

Muela del Cortes, also in Valencia, is a 30,000 hectare national hunting reserve. Walking is much more difficult here, as the area is mainly covered by thick shrub and pine trees.
However, if you have a car this is an ideal area to explore, as there are miles and miles of single track road with barely another car in sight.

This park is known for its deep ravines. In particular, in the middle of the park lies the 7 mile long Cortes de Pallas gorge, on whose reservoir lies a hydroelectric power station. American black bass, pike and carp fishing is available free.

The Sierre Espuna park is located in the heart of the Murcia region, just south of Alicante. This 25,000 hectare park is part of the Andalucian mountain range.

Hire Car Alicante - National Parks

The Sierre Espuna National Park is mainly composed of lots of deep valleys. It is home to many unusual rock formations, caused by the erosion of the mainly limestone landscape over thousands of years. “El Gigante” is the most impressive and hence most visited of these. The Sierre Espuna Park is also one of the most suitable for hiking – most of its peaks are easily accessible, including Pico Morron, the highest point in the park. Flora and fauna are various here, but the slightly wetter and more temperate stream areas are home to some particularly interesting replies, such as the green frog and salamander.

The Carrascoy en Velle (Carrascoy and the Valley) National Park, also in the Murcia region, is of particular interest partly due to its proximity to the city of Murcia itself. This makes it the largest green space in the whole metropolitan area. The Carrascoy en Velle is made up of the valley which surrounds the the River Segura, and covers an area of 16,724 hectares.

The slopes are mostly extremely steep, the lower parts of which are used to grow citrus fruits. There are lots of interesting facilities in the Carrascoy en Velle, which make it an excellent one to visit. These include visitor and environmental centres, an observatory, an arboretum as well as several castles.
