More about Alicante, Spain

The city of Alicante, which bears the same name as the surrounding area, is capital of the province. If you arrive at Alicante airport you can rent or hire a car here.

It is a truly historic port, with history in parts dating back to Roman times and beyond.
The city of Alicante, however, despite its charms, is seen by many who visit the region as a best location from which to rent a car and the holiday coast of the Costa Blanca.

So called for its bright white sand beaches and baking sun, the northern coast in particular is very popular with holidaymakers seeking sun, sand and sea.

The best-known of the Costa Blanca resorts is Benidorm, which despite its' reputation, is now a very modern, well-equipped destination, offering every possible grade of accommodation to the tourist.

It would be a shame, however, when visiting the area to limit yourself to the holiday resorts of the coast. Alicante has many more delights to offer for those wishing to get off the well-beaten track.

Why not take your hire car out of Alicante and head into the mountains, and discover charming ancient hidden villages and towns? Much of the area's Roman heritage is still in evidence, and a trip to a historical site makes a fascinating day out.

Dramatic views over Alicante
Alicante beach
A province of south-eastern Spain, Alicante lies on the country's Mediterranean coast. The area is a very popular holiday area, offering a huge selection of diverse attractions to the visitor and an ideal location to hire a car from. The climate is favourable for most of the year, however there are contrasts of weather depending on the area.

The south of the province is semi-arrid and has very hot summers, whilst the true Mediterranean climate exists mostly in the north. The inland area of Alicante is mountainous, and it's not unheard of for it to snow for several days a year here!
The port and marina are very important to Alicante – in fact, it is from these that some of the most stunning vistas of the city and its castle can be seen. The castle is one of Alicante's most striking features.

Perched high on a rocky outcrop, it is a must see for the first-time visitor. Other notable buildings which are worth visiting are the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Co-Cathedral of St Nicholas of Bari, and the Casa de la Asegurada, which houses the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante.
