Driving in Spain is mostly very
easy, but there are few things to remember in order to make sure
that your holiday motoring is stress free!
The minimum age for driving in Spain is 18, providing you hold a full UK licence. However, beware as some hire companies impose higher age limits – check when you book.
Cars drive on the right in Spain, and the speed limits are 12okm/h on motorways, 90km/h elsewhere, and 50km/h in town. DON'T drink and drive – the blood alcohol limit is even stricter than the UK at only 0.05%. You could face a stiff fine at best, and at worst could end in prison. Not worth the risk!
Always check what is included in your hire agreement. Extras like child seats and adding other drivers can soon add up, so know what you're getting when you book.
Know what your liabilities are: in particular, be aware of what your excess (if any) is in the event of an accident – these can be surprisingly large, so don't get caught out. You MUST have both parts of your licence (paper and photocard) with you.
Air conditioning is recommended, particularly in summer. Hire the best level of car you can afford – comfort really does matter, especially if you will be doing a lot of touring.
Considering a diesel car can save you money on fuel. When driving, stick to the right and don't obstruct fast lanes. Stay alert and familiarise yourself with the road environment and you should have a safe and enjoyable journey.
And if you're heading off the beaten track? Keep your wits about you – in many rural areas in Alicante, roads can be single track and are often bendy and steep. What's more, you're just as likely to meet a shepherd and his flock around the next corner as you are to see another car!
