More touring ideas for car hire in Spain

Benidorm is probably Alicante's best-known and most popular holiday destination and an ideal location to pick up a car hire.

Over 4 million holidaymakers a year are greeted by the towering skyline of modern towers as they fly over the sweeping bay. Benidorm's beaches are some of the longest in any holiday resort in the world.

The skyscrapers themselves are dominated by the Puig Campana mountain, which forms the backdrop to the resort, and is one of the largest peaks on the Costa Blanca. The mountain range gives Benidorm its special micro-climate, with average temperatures of 15c in winter and 26c in summer. Why not hire a car in Benidorm and explore the hills?

Benidorm is divided in two by a rocky outcrop, on which stands the old town. The two areas on either side (and beaches of the same name), Poniente and Levante, are where most of the hotels are situated.

All of Benidorm's beaches boast blue flags, Widely regarded as the birthplace of the package holiday, Benidorm knows how to cater for the hotel guest.

One is almost spoilt for choice when choosing accommodation here, though of particular note is the 4 star Gran Hotel Bali, which until 2007 was the tallest skyscraper in Spain.

One of Benidorm's most popular family activities are its wonderful theme parks. Terra Mitica is located inland from the city, and is the area's largest and most popular park. It's easy to get to by taxi or in your hire car. It is inspired by ancient Mediterranean civilisations, and is split into five different themed sections: Iberia, the Islands, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Mundomar and Aqualandia are located on the outskirts of the Levante side of the city.

Mundomar is a marine animal park which puts on impressive shows, and Aqualandia is a water park, a fantastic way for the whole family to cool off on a hot day.

Other must-do activities in Benidorm include a boat trip out to the mysterious offshore rock known locally as Peacock Island. Catching the boat from the port for the 10 minute ride offers fabulous views of the Benidorm skyline. Again the easiest way to get to these locations is to rent a car.

Water sports are, of course, extremely popular here. There is even a cable ski in operation during the summer. And if you're a mini-golf fan, Benidorm is definitely the place to be! Of course, the starting point for most of those staying here are the beaches themselves.

Levante is known as the “sunrise” beach. It can get very crowded in high season, and is backed by a broad promenade offering all manner of attractions.

Pontiente, or “sunset” beach, is a little quieter, longer, and has the added bonus of the fabulous sunsets for Benidorm is so famous. Make the most of your holiday to Benidorm and the surrounding countryside, by hiring a car for a few days at least.
